With almost 4,000 auto thefts a year and ever-changing weather conditions, Kansas City residents must be proactive in protecting their vehicles. Both sides of State Line require motorists to own car insurance. Missouri is a “no pay, no play” state, meaning that if you are injured in an accident and do not have car insurance, you are not entitled to any money damages for pain and suffering.
Missouri has the 17th highest rate of uninsured motorists in the country. In contrast, Kansas is one of the top states with insured drivers. To keep you and your car safe no matter what, read more about Kansas City auto insurance rules and impacts.
Both KCK and KCMO require a high amount of car insurance coverage, which makes comparison shopping more important for buyers. This table breaks down minimum auto insurance requirements by state:
Liability coverage | Uninsured coverage | |
---|---|---|
KS | $25,000 BI/person $50,000 BI/accident $25,000 PD/accident |
$25,000 BI $50,000 BI/accident |
MO | $25,000 BI/person $50,000 BI/accident $10,000 PD/accident |
$25,000 BI $50,000 BI/accident |
BI=bodily injury coverage
PD = property damage coverage
Personal injury protection minimum liability is required in Kansas only: $4,500 medical expenses per person, $900/month disability/loss of income (for one year), $25/day in-home services, $2,000 funeral, burial or cremation expense and $4,500 rehabilitation expense.
Annual premiums for car insurance vary slightly within Kansas City. Because rates change based on age, history and car type, we researched one subset of purchaser for comparison purposes. We found that a 40-year-old male can expect to pay on average between $1,183 and $1,569 for full coverage in KC.
Lowest rates are in Kansas City, Kansas and North Kansas City, Missouri. These areas also have lower mortgage and rental rates. Residents in the Center City neighborhoods, including Hyde Park and Ivanhoe Northeast, see car insurance costs rise to an average of $1,500. The most expensive neighborhood for car insurance is near KU Medical Center and the 39th Street district.
As they say in Kansas City, “If you don’t like the weather, wait 10 minutes.” Drivers should expect every type of weather, including rain, snow, hail and scorching heat. During extreme weather, conditions can rapidly change into hazardous situations. In snow and ice, the 2,506 crashes reported in 2016 are more than half the number of total crashes involving speeding in any weather.
During the fall, deer mating season begins, leading to much higher crash rates. Between 2007 and 2014, Kansas City metro had 13,640 crashes involving deer. These collisions are both costly and deadly—Kansas Department of Transportation estimated that deer-related crashes cost $77.8 million in 2013.
